Situated in the village of Ochiltree in East Ayrshire, this house was the childhood home of Scottish author George Douglas Brown.
Published in 1901, a year before the author’s death at age 33, The House with the Green Shutters is a novel by the Scottish writer George Douglas Brown.
The novel is set in the mid 19th Century and is set in the fictitious town of Barbie – based on the town of Ochiltree. The book is seminal in its approach as it breaks the conventions of traditionally sentimental accounts of simple country folk popular around this time.
The real house differs greatly from the one described in “The House With the Green Shutters”, but is significant in that it was bath the author’s home and since 2007 has operated as the Green Shutters pub.
